Researchers are excited about natural language processing. There is use of deep learning here. It consists of both natural language understanding (NLU) and natural language generation (NLG). First a computer looks at the text and understands it. Later it writes text automatically or semi-automatically.
This capability is used in academics by both the faculty and students. In business, it helps to communicate with the stakeholders. This capability can be broadly applied.
This does not obliterate the need for creative writing which requires human insight, judgement and intelligence. AI does make a difference to creative people. They have got an efficient helping hand. It is like other aids such as copy editing. Thus AI enhances human capabilities.
There is Word Q, where technology suggests other ways to express your statements. Contemporary AI has learnt correlations in huge corpuses of information from every source online. It finds out what goes with what statistically. It has little semantic understanding. It operates on massive scale. Though what it does is necessary, it is not sufficient. It could be augmented with semantic understanding.
The above ideas have been articulated by Yoav Shoham, professor emeritus of computer science at Stanford University, and co-founder of AI21 Labs.
