His original name was Baburao Krishnarao Mestry. He was born on 3rd Tune, 1890 at Kolhapur. He took education up to 4th-5th standard. He did not take any formal education of art. It was innate in him. He achieved so much in the film industry and the field of art. Baburao added an element of art to the movies. He was a well-known name in the Marathi film industry. He set new standards as art director, film settings, and theatre. He was called Cinema Kesari by Lokmanya Tilak. Baburao’s studio is still there in Kolhapur. The statues that he sculpted still stand in and around Kolhapur. He expired on 16th January, 1954. He was survived by his wife and eight children. His son Ravindra Mestry was also a good painter.
