  • Four Cities for Clothing Trends

For decades, the world’s clothing trends stemmed from seasonal spectacles in just four cities — New York, London, Milan and Paris. But in recent years, many other cities have launched alternatives to hype local models and retailers. New York Fashion Week generates $865 million for the US. Others too would like to secure a fraction of their revenue. Fashion buyers do go to New York or Europe. But they should now start getting their inventories from elsewhere too.

  • Retailer’s Brand Image

A retailer’s brand image is made up of the perceptions about its merchandise, customer expectations and experience and the way they distinguish it from other competitions. As the formats are more or less similar, brand management is all about how a retailer makes a significant difference by building up top-of-mind recall and customer preference for itself over others. The customers expect a ‘coolness ‘factor, better shopping experience, connect and quality. The retailer uses tools such as MR, data analytics and consumer behaviour studies in association with merchandising teams to achieve the objectives.

Brand management creates loyalty in customers’ minds. It is a commitment to a particular retailer that survives the test of time, market changes, rising MRPs, competition and occasional quality fluctuations.

Some useful measures for better brand management in retail are:

A Strong Reason to Buy ( RTB ) : It is the proposition of the retail brand. In other words, it offers the projected differentiation, the value promised and the incentive to return on a regular basis.

The Service Quality : The hygiene level, the measures to delight the customer and great service influence the loyalty.

Innovative Schemes :   There are schemes and offers. The products are refreshed periodically. There are discount schemes. All this creates word-of-mouth publicity. All this increases the footfalls.

Loyalty Programmes : These programmes reward the loyal customers. They are a reason for them to return to the shop again.

Communication : A retail  brand must know when and how to communicate its proposition, loyalty programme updates and the schemes.

  • Traffic Signal Selling

Jeffery Archer, the celebrated British author, visited India in May 2010 to inaugurate Landmark, a bookstore at Palladium, Parel and also release his latest book on short stories. He was interviewed by the DNA reporter, and he enquired politely about the booksellers at traffic signals. He feels that they should stay. He saw them selling his book a couple of years ago. It is his greatest thrill about the city of Mumbai. He pleads that the authorities should not remove them from the signals. Apart from books, at traffic signals various eatables, toys, mopping clothes, incense sticks, newspapers and magazines are being sold. Some sell lottery tickets too.

  • Photography Courses and Careers

Many certificate courses in photography range from one to six months duration. They help students to learn the basics before they chose to specialize in a particular genre. Those who want to specialize in a particular genre can opt for a diploma course. A professional photographer does a lot more than just taking pictures . He manages artists-products, set lights, manages the time and creates quality images.

The genres range from candid, product, food photography and photojournalism to wildlife, car, interior and fashion photography.

Candid photography: Here there is no stage set. It is impromptu. It is the art of capturing the right moment at the right time. It aims at capturing things or moments differently. He captures the image before it is too late.

Wildlife photography : They click animals in their natural habitat. It requires detailed knowledge of wild animals and their behavior. It also requires an understanding of their natural habitat. The buyers of wild  life photography are the media and wild life enthusiasts.

Photojournalism: A photojournalist capture events and evidence through pictures which are  later published with relevant information. It  requires understanding of journalism along with alertness. It also requires willingness to work at any time.

Bharati Vidhyapeeth, Pune runs a School of Photography which offers a 2 years course in Creative Media with optional one year specialization. It also offers Diploma courses in Advertising and Commercial Photography, Fashion and People Photography and Photojournalism. The courses are of 18 months duration.

Though photography was once considered to be elite and expensive art form, it has now become a common man’s medium. It can have the smallest thing as its subject.

The techniques have undergone a huge transformation, and that has affected the style and aesthetics of photography. Every new technology has affected the imagery  — from black and white to colour negative, to chrome, to digital, to photoshop and now to cell phones. The factor that has remained constant is the use of light and the content. Its basic ability to document something with candid honesty has remained unchanged.

  • OLED TVs

Ever since the beginning of the century, we find that the LCD TVs have picked up. Still, technology-wise these TVs are not efficient. Liquid crystals can pattern themselves in different ways depending on current. However, they cannot produce their own light. Thus every LCD screen requires back up light. They do need filters too. Ultimately, there is a loss of 80 per cent energy through light switches and colour filters. The other problems are the slow responsiveness and low contrasts. The advantage is that the technology is mature and scaled up so much that it is cost efficient. It is difficult to dislodge it fast.

The alternative technology is being tried is OLED. It entered the market 15 years back. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diodes. It is an organic material that is soft. It can be spread thin. If a TV screen is made of OLED, it can be as thin as a wall-paper. These screen offer superior colour quality. The picture can be viewed from  any angle. It has high contrast. As OLEDs are soft, these can be made to bend. In future, there could be foldable and flexible screens.

Still, these are early days for this technology. It is expensive. Its manufacturing process is being researched. The cost will come down. The present technology uses glass substrate. It is being tried to replace it with silicon substrate. That integrates it well to the electronics. It will take a few years to commercialise the research.

Already OLGD TVs are available from LG and Samsung. They have mastered the art making flexible substrates to remove rigidness of glass substrate.

Other competing technology is that of quantum dots. These are organic materials which emit light superbly. They provide better colour purity than OLEDs. Still the technology is on the drawing board stage. It is not ready for commercial use. The search for better light emitters is continuously on. One mineral perovskite has shown potential. Technologies mature over a period of 15 -20 years. Such future technologies are still far off.

  • Prasoon Joshi

Prasoon Joshi is indebted to advertising for giving him his wife Aparna, and the luxury of writing poetry. His biggest inspiration is his 10 year old daughter Aaishaanya and his nani.

He belongs to the quiet hills of Almora in Kumaon. His father was a civil servant and during his tenure in the education ministry., he was posted as PCS officer. Prasoon used to remain in the library during night, and woke up to his mother’s early morning riyaaz.Prasoon’s mother is an A-grade singer and sang for AIR and was a teacher at a college. Prasoon thus inherits music in his blood. She also writes in Pahadi and has recently written a book. Sumitranandan Pant is her father’s cousin. At 16, he began reading Nietzsche which blew his mind. He was from a religious family, and could not believe reading ‘God is dead.’ and that sort of thing. He could not believe that someone could be so iconoclastic. he did not know how much he understood but he understood the style.

He did his  masters in mathematics and MBA from IMT, Ghaziabad. His summer assignment was at Grey Worldwide. He joined O&M on the creative side. His boss was his guru — Suresh Mallik who created Mile Sur Tumhara.Suresh Malik was the Creative Director of O&M. Prasoon would make tea for Malik and do all the odd jobs. Malik even flung a shoe at him for making a mistake and would keep asking him to write visuals as he would for a child. It taught Prasoon to reach out to a lager audience. Then Piyush taught him metaphors and language. He honed his skills under the shadow of Piyush Pandey. Piyush taught him the nuances of connecting with the masses. The combination of these two people groomed him. He was taught the craft of writing by Neil French. He moved to Mccann Erickson as the Creative Director and created Thanda Matlab Coca Cola and Happydent’s Mera Tan Roshan, Mera Man Roshan. He is now the executive chairman and South Asia Creative Diraector of McCann Erickson.

He wrote for Subha Mugdal’s music albums. Amitabh heard a song Matti from the album and wrote a letter to him. He told Raj Kumar Santoshi about him.He wrote lyrics for the title track in Lajja. Ilayaraja composed his first song which Lata Mangeshkar sang. He met Adi Chopra at airport and their equation clicked. Adi made him write the lyrics for Hum Tum.He wrote lyrics for Rang De Basanti and Tare Zameen Par.

He writes in the languages he has heard — Hindi, Urdu, and the dialects. His real obsession is with sunshine. That comes from his childhood. The sun moves across the valley in the meadows. The shadows play with the sunlight. It is like a sound and light show. These images reflect in his poetry.

He has great respect for Gulzar whom he calls a safed moti. He says, ‘Mumbai ko kai cheezon ke bawajood maaf kar deta hoon kyunki yahan Gulzar sahab rehte hain.’ I ignore many limitations of Mumbai because Gulzar resides in Mumbai. He likes poet lyricists like Kaifi Azmi, Shailendra and Majrooh. According to him, poetry expresses feelings economically.

He has written the script, screenplay, dialogues and songs for the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. He wrote his first book at the tender age of 17 — Mai(n) Aur Woh.

Prasoon Joshi has donned the role of a music composer in Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan. He composed the tune of Kaun Si Dor.He conceived the tune while taking bath and reecorded it on iPhone, and emailed the same To Prakash Jha and Shankar Mahadevan. They liked the tune and decided to retain it as it is. Pandit Chhanulal Mishra agreed to sing it.

He feels that ideas choose a man rather than the other way round  — a man choosing the idea. Some songs are like ripe mangoes. They fall out of a poet’s imagination. A lyricist is given a narration. There is a discussion. Then it is down to the music director and the lyricist. A word that is important is adjusted in the tune by the music director. In a song, there are several things left unspoken. That allows the listener participation. He likes writing songs featured in the background. In Taare Zameen Par, a child being left at the Boarding School has unspoken fears of a child being abandoned. Main Kabhi Batlata Nahin, Par Andhere Se Darta Hoon, Ma(n).There is a choice here — whether to articulate mother’s feelings or child’s. The song appeals as there is a parent and child in each one of us.

He does not take success too seriously. But success makes others take notice of your work. Your view-point is respected. You are given space to work. But there is a disadvantage. You can get away with some mediocre work.

  • Crowdsourcing

It is a method by which the consumers participate in the decision making process. They use it to seek new ideas through contests and campaigns. There is an i10 story contest for writing a commercial for this car brand. The winner shares the screen space with the brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan. There was a public design contest sponsored by the Ministry of Finance to create a symbol for rupee. Hero asked people to interpret Hum Mein Hai Hero anthem and created several TV commercials from this content. Perfetti arranged package design contest for Happydent chewing gum. Pepsi, arranged ‘suggest a flavour’ contest for its wafer brand. This term crowdsourcing is coined by Jeff Howe in a 2006 article in Wired magazine.

  • Sound Technology

Sound technology has two dimensions — recorded sound and live sound. Live sound sector requires knowledge of specific procedures, techniques and equipment that are not taught in generic or studio sound courses. Britannia Row Productions is one of the world’s leading audio rental companies supplying sound equipment and sound crew for tours and concerts. It has been requested to introduce training for the live music sector, which has revenues and jobs. Thus Britannia has introduced a course the admission the to which is open to anyone after an online entry assessment. It is a 12-week full time course. The course teaches basics of acoustics and electrics, setting up and connecting stage, mixing console and loud speaker system. They teach Yamaha, Digico, Avid and Midas digital consoles, which are the industry leading platforms. They teach advanced concepts such as loud speaker system design, analysis and rigging, wireless, technology such as in-ear monitors and preparations processes for PA systems. The course focuses on integrating theory to practice. They, therefore, train directly within a live sound setup.
