  • Magic of Cinema

Cinema makes a common man larger than life.He has been given a special silver screen image. This could be the reason of the progress of movies even after the advent of TV. Cinema becomes a blessing for the life of common people. Technology has brought many gadgets for entertainment in the last 100 years — from radio to iPad. But that has not diminished the magic of movies. Instead, all these gadgets have contributed to the wider and deeper influence of cinema.

  • Cinema and Social Message

Though cinema was treated as a business, there were film makers such as V Shataram, Mehboob Khan, Bimal Roy and K A Abbas who blended social realism with entertainment. They made their films vehicles for change, and social mirrors of their time. They touched issues such as gender diaparity and communal harmony in their movies.

  • TV Transmission and Receiving

A transmitter sends continuous elecro-magnetic waves. The continuous wave is called a carrier wave. Its frequency is very high. ( It alternates rapidly .) Its pattern is constant. The another entity is the picture-worm from the  caesium cells. Both these go through a modulator. It superimposes the worm shapes over the carrier wave. It is further amplified. It is sent as a signal.

At the same time, another modulated carrier wave leaves the transmitter carrying sound. Its wavelength is different from the video transmission. Thus they do not disturb each other.

At the receiving end, the picture-worm activates a thin electron beam of varying strength in the CRT of the TV set. It strikes the fluorescent screen at the front of the tube to make a tiny dot glow. It traces the first line and then next and next from left to right till the set has received the whole picture and then begins the next one. These pictures move so rapidly that our eyes perceive a stream of them merging into a continuous motion picture.

  • Five Ways to Nurture Creativity

Andrew Pek and Jeannine McGlade has written Stimulated ! and has spelled out five innovative approaches to keep the creative thought process going. Scouting is the backbone. It identifies and uses the stimulus so as to initiate the creative cycle. Cultivating develops the creative sparks in conductive environment. Playing is the experimental stage that fiddles with stimulus and maintains curiosity. Venturing is a leap into the unknown territory.Harvesting converts the sparks and ideas into real and value-added things.

Every individual can cultivate and demonstrate these habits to unleash his creative genius. It is to be activated to produce creative expressions ( style ) and impressions ( impact ). A mucician performs using tempo, tone, melody, style and selection. It is his expression. The music he produces — the feelings and emotions — is his impression. In creativity, there is a choice of different creative expressions, and as a result we make many different impressions.

  • Foley Artists

Foley Artists recreate the sounds of everyday life in the moves. They listen to the original sounds captured on location and apply their own observations to make even the most mundane tasks impactful, e.g. clinking of tea cups. They use diverse things to make sounds e.g. metal scrap, leather belts, knives, land lines and such other props. American artist Jack Foley devoted his life to to creating such sounds and hence the name. Foley artists see a film once and make a list of props they will need. There is no formal training available. They must have a keen ear and a lot of passion. Currently, there are 10-12 artists in Mumbai. These days there are digital libraries with an array of standard sounds. They are paid Rs. 2 lac for the whole film, whereas the foriegn artists charge the same amount for a day.

  • Film Editing Today

The editing room in the 1980s had large machines such as Steenback, Kem, Movieola, Acmade etc. The room smelt of acetic acid. The films were cut and pasted physically.

The editing, as we know, has since the changed. The change appeared in the 1990s. Avid came with the first editing software. It was run on Apple’s Macintosh II. Film editing became as simple as editing a word document. The late Renu Saluja was the pioneer to use such a system. The hardware capability was low — limited disk space. It was possible to edit only 20 minutes of a movie and the disk was full. The edited portion was saved. Then everything was deleted to accommodate the next tranche of 20 minutes. In 1993, 4GB hard disk appeared in one Jhuhu studio. Avid software called Film Composer was used. Since mid-90s till 2000, Avid with Mac was a preferred combination for editing. The software used for TV programmes and ad films was Media Composer. Similarly, Film Composer was used for feature films. Small films used other Mac-based software called Media 100 and Adobe Premiere. Later movie editing became much easier with a range of Apple machines — MacII, Quadra, PPC9500/132, G3, G4,G5 and MacPro.

All editingis these days completed on Mac-based Avid and  Final Cut Pro (FCP) systems.

  • Mind Mapping

Mind Mapping concept has been created 40 years ago. A mind map is a visual representation of the thought processes that can be used for a variety of purposes e. g. problem solving and communications. Mind Mapping is a 21st century tool. Traditionally, linear note taking uses words, numbers, letters, lines and lists. All these are important elements of learning and dominantly left-brain skills. The skills of right brain include colour, image, spatial arrangement and visual rhythm. Mind Maps combine the left and right brain skills to synergize brain’s learning and thinking power. It is a whole-brain thinking tool. Mind Maps starts with a central image, and branches off. It demonstrates infinite thinking capacity of the human brain. It is aptly called the Swiss Army Knife for the brain.

Tony Buzan is an authority on Mind Maps. In 2006, he created the iMindMap software. In 2009, it was nominated for the Best New Product Developed in the UK by the Chartered Institute of IT.
