Apple expects to put its autonomous or driverless car on the roads by 2024. Whereas the other companies are developing their autonomous vehicles as robotic taxis, Apple plans to build a personal car for mass market. It is still not a clear whether Apple would manufacture the car on its own or would tie up with a manufacturing partner. The whole project has been named as Project Titan. It has been commenced since 2014. It has proceeded unevenly. At one point, Apple drew back the effort to focus on software only.

The central strategy of Apple is to focus on the design of the battery. As you are aware, 50 plus per cent of the cost of the car is contributed by the battery. Apple has tried to radically reduce the cost of batteries and increase their efficiency. Artificial intelligence chief is taking over the self-driving unit. It is an indication that Apple sees software and system as the key ingredient.
