This coinage combines ‘hijacking’ and ‘ news’. It is the exploitation of news for marketing mileage. In these days of social media, newsjacking has become possible in real time. Prior to this, when India won freedom in 1947, many companies attempted to appropriate a piece of independence day either subtly or brazenly.
